Blessing of the Animals Sunday

Bring your pet to the HLC Blessing of the Animals Worship on the Lawn this Sunday, 9/17/17 at 10am.

The blessing of pets and animals is often celebrated on October 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, or on a Sunday near that date.  This is also set to coincide as the culminating conclusion for the Season of Creation. In the Scriptures, the act of blessing means 'the imparting of power or life.' The person performing the blessing is mediating that power from God or Christ to the person performing or the animal involved. To bless is more than an expression of goodwill and caring. To bless is to impart God's power in person! The blessing of each animal, by name, means that health, healing and life are being mediated from God for the benefit of the animal in its relationship with its human partners. Be careful not to reinforce the separation of human animals and other animals by this blessing. Instead, consider reinforcing our common kinship by blessing ALL animals--human and otherwise.

God's Work. Our Hands.

Many thanks to all the hands who made this year's God's Work, Our Hands Sunday a SUCCESS!!! Our most blessings bags yet were created that will now go into the community and be given to those in need. Socks, washcloths, toiletries, food, etc., all of which were donated and purchased with Thrivent Action Team funds. Thank you to all who donated and helped. You make a difference!!.

Blessing of the Backpacks

Thanks to everyone who gathered and donated items for the backbacks that we will donate to Skinner Middle School!

Bienvenidos Food Bank

Highlands Lutheran is an official ORANGE BOX church -- a drop-off site for Bienvenidos Food Bank!  If you feel moved to contribute food to help feed the increasing number of poor people in our community, please bring your canned or packaged food to the big orange box on the porch of the church at 3995 Irving St. Items are blessed each Sunday and delivered to Bienvenidos every week so that they can distribute them to individuals in need. In August we need oatmeal and other cereals. Thank you again and again for your generous contributions to the Food Bank!

Many families will benefit from all of the donations received.Donations will be blessed each Sunday and will then be delivered weekly to the food bank for distribution to hundreds of families in our Northwest Denver community.  Thank you for your continued support of this ministry. Your donations are making a difference!

Highlands Happy Hour

Highlands Happy Hour takes place at 6pm on the third Sunday of each month at Berkely Untapped. Come join us for refreshments and good conversation.

Fair Trade Coffee

Our efforts for Fair Trade continue throughout the year as HLC has committed to serve and sell fairly traded coffee exclusively. Check out the coffee packages on the black shelves in our Narthex. (next to the sunflowers) Each package costs $10. Please, put a check or cash in the box provided. Coffee always makes a good gift!

A Ticket To Ride - Update

The generosity of all the people of Highlands Lutheran Church always amazes me.  Actually, it overwhelms me.  The Ticket to Ride program, which is going into its second year, has raised $2325.00 to provide transportation for those at St. Francis who just need a bit of help to get started on the way to employment!

On behalf of so many who have received assistance because of your giving, thank you so very much!!!

Harvest Festival Update

Thank you to everyone who made the Harvest Festival a huge success!!  On Saturday, October 15th from 10-2, the HLC Moms' Group and  Highland Christian Church hosted a Harvest Festival here at HLC. We had such a great time with live music, food, and plenty of activities. Many members of the community came to join in on the fun. Our bake sale raised $265 toward youth ministry and we collected lots of food for Bienvenidos Food Bank! Well done, Highlands Lutheran and Highland Christian.

Crop Hunger Walk Update

On Sunday October 16th, from Noon to 3:00pm, HLC and HCC participated in the Northwest Denver Crop Hunger Walk. Thank you to all who made the Northwest Denver Crop Hunger Walk a success! After a soup and bread lunch and some shopping at the Alternative Gift Fair, Walkers walked either a short neighborhood walk or a longer walk to the Bienvenidos Food Bank. Approximately $2,000 was raised and 5 crates of food were donated over the weekend. The money raised will be divided between Church World Service and our local Food Bank, Bienvenidos. We are already looking forward to next year.

 Looking Back at 2015...

God's Work Our Hands Sunday a great success!

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. On Sunday, September 13th, members of Highland Christian Church joined members of HLC to pack 500 pounds of beans to donate to Bienvenidos Food Bank! At the same time, another group walked the neighborhood, hanging Bienvenidos food donation bags on home doorknobs.

Blessing of the Animals on the lawn!

As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd: a procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Animals. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures....
